When I brought home my first Great Dane, Isis, in early 2001 I know that it would not take long before we had another. I was right. Fenway came home to us later that summer. Shortly after Isis and Fenway joined our family I discovered the Mid-Atlantic Great Dane Rescue League (MAGDRL). I had no idea that there was a need to rescue Great Dane's. Little did I know that MAGDRL typically has between 70-90 Great Dane's and Great Dane mixes available for adoption at any one time. As soon as I found this out I knew that my next Great Dane would come from rescue. Unfortunately it turned out that Isis was a very sick girl with several chronic illnesses. After a long fight we lost her in November 2004. Not only did my husband and I take her death very hard, but Fenway was also depressed. When Falkor came into the rescue the following February, a starved and emaciated six week old puppy, I knew that he would be our next permanent family member. He has since grown into a very happy and healthy boy that has no lasting effects from his poor beginnings.
When I became involved with MAGDRL I had no idea how quickly the organization would become a big part of my life. I started with attending events with Fenway, which quickly built into helping to plan events. Then I started to assist with a small piece of the MAGDRL web site, which quickly grew into taking care of the entire website. You can see where this is going... I am currently a member of their Board of Directors and the MD/DC area Volunteer lead.
I am also on the Board of Directors of the Potomac Valley Irish Wolfhound Club (PVIWC), which is a regional breed club dedicated to the health and welfare of the Irish Wolfhound. And, I am a trained volunteer with Noah's Wish.
